KILLED IN ACTION AFTER WAR ENDS

Sgt Max Holben, 24, of Norcatur, Killed in the pacific on August 28

Like a bolt from the sky came the shocking and sad news last week that S/Sgt Max Holben, 24 of Norcatur had been killed in action in the Pacific theater of war on August 28. The date of his death was two weeks after V-J Day when it was supposed hostilities had ceased, and this added to the shock to his parents, who quite naturally felt that with the war over, he would be safe.
Sgt Holben was the son of Mrs. Fannie Holben, Norcatur, and Harold Holben, who lives on a farm west of Norcatur. The message from the War Department was received by Mrs. Holben, September 12, and it was a terrible shock to her. According to the message, Sgt Holben was killed in action on Ryukyu Island, undoubtedly the bomber plane which he was radio operator was shot down by the Japs, who chose to disregard the surrender order of the Japenese Imperial Command, made on August 14.
Born on a farm near Norcatur, he received his grade school education in the rural school, and was graduated from Norcatur Rural High School in 1938. He entered the service in July 1942, receiving his training at Scott Field, Illinois and San Bernandino, California. He went overseas in November 1943 and was assigned to the 386th Bomb Squadron (L). 312 Bomb Group. He was a radio operator and last April was awarded the Air Medal for 100 hours of aerial duty under combat conditions. In a letter, Max wrote his mother in July, he said that he needed only two more hours to earn another similar medal, which would mean that at that time he had 198 hours aerial duty under combat conditions.
It is indeed with the deepest sympathy that the people of Norcatur an the entire county receive this sad news of the loss of this young man.
